About Acid Mine Drainage

If you have spent any time in the extraction industry you know what Acid Rock Drainage and Acid Mine Drainage is. Also called ARD and AMD.

For those not in the extraction and mining industry, Acid Rock Drainage or Acid Mine Drainage (ARD and AMD) refers to acidic water flowing typically from metal mines and coal mines. The effect of acid rock drainage or acid mine drainage can be significantly damaging to the environment and create havoc on surrounding wildlife and organisms. Much of the damage in found in the heavy metals that contaminate water with a low pH.

There are many ways to neutralize acid mine drainage and acid rock drainage. Here are a few:

1. Lime Neutralization
This method uses lime in a high-density sludge (HDS) process.

2. Calcium Silicate Neutralization
This method uses calcium silicate feedstock to neutralize the acidity in Acid Mine Drainage.

3. Carbonate Neutralization
This method is not as effective as initially hoped. It typically uses limestone or similar elements to neutralize a low pH.

4. Ion Exchange
This is a new process that uses cation exchange.

5. Constructed Wetlands
This method typically has a low cost.

6. Precipitation of Metal Sulfides
